We all know that smoking leads to premature death of hundreds of thousands of individuals each year. Yet, despite advertisements, news stories, and educational classes directed at informing the public about the dangers of smoking, few people seem to realize that not only can nicotine cause you to die years before you should, but can and does lower the quality of your life on a daily bases.
Smoking has been directly related to lung cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and chronic lung disease. In addition smoking increases your risk for other kinds of cancer such as cancer of bladder, kidneys, cervix, throat, and mouth. Each of these diseases puts a huge burden on your finances, health and your relationship with loved ones. These illnesses results in long hospital stays and the inability to fully participate in life.
Your children and grandchildren do not get to enjoy the time spent with you and you will be too ill to fully enjoy them. Even if you are one of the lucky smokers who do not suffer from a life threatening smoking related illness, smoking still can and does affect your ability to live life to its fullest.

One shocking reason why smoking is bad for you is that it puts over 4000 compounds into your body and blood stream. A number of these compounds are toxic resulting in the slow poisoning of your body and organs and making you feel less than your healthiest. While most people would never consider eating rat poison or drinking rocket fuel or embalming fluid willingly, smoking puts the same toxins these items contain in your body. Arsenic used in rat poisoning, methane use in rocket fuel and formaldehyde which is a body tissue preservative are all contained in the tobacco smoke we inhale. These toxins slowly build up in our systems making us feel less healthy than we might otherwise feel.

Young people who smoke find it much harder to participate in physical sports that they enjoy often finding that they simply do not have the air to play basketball, ski, or participate as actively as they would like, thus limiting their enjoyment of much of the leisure activities that are interesting and fun. As a person gets older smoking can stop you from advancing in your career. Smokers suffer from more illnesses and miss more work than do non smokers this can and sometimes result in stalling your career as business owners and companies are less likely to promote employees who miss a lot of work time. Besides, missing out on promotions these illnesses often result in lowering your finances as missed work means missed wages. In addition, your medical bills are higher and medical insurance coverage is more limited for people who smoke. Resulting in higher bills and less insurance and money to pay those bills.
Normal activities such as vacations where walking and sightseeing is involved may pose significant problems for a smoker as they simply may not be able to get enough air to walk long distances and enjoy even moderate physical exercise.
Pregnant women often experience more problems during their pregnancy and their babies are more likely to suffer from low birth weight, smaller than normal lungs, and birth defects.
In addition, smokers are more likely to age faster than non smokers getting more wrinkles and getting them earlier than non smokers. They also suffer from dryer skin and have more difficulty sleeping which in turn can make life more stressful for smokers than those who don’t smoke.
Smokers may also find themselves social outcasts in certain situations. With more and more public places going smoke free and more non smokers becoming concerned over the effects of second hand smoke, smokers often find themselves feeling unwanted in everything from social to family gatherings. These feelings of being ostracized can lead to depression and loneliness.
